ASK AUNT MARY – PEOPLE AND PLACES

February 8th, 2012 | By admin

I have no idea what to call this topic, but “People and Places” sounded pretty good. That’s what I’ll be talking about today, people and places.

My husband, son, and myself spent a day yesterday at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee. We all went to college there, and it was wonderful to be back on campus. It has grown tremendously since my husband and I attended. It has also grown a lot since my son attended. It was good to see old friends and to meet new ones.

Before I went to sleep last night, I tried to put my thoughts together for this article. I reviewed in my mind what I had seen and heard yesterday. Maybe I can show you a little midget of what I encountered.

First of all, we listened to men talk about God and his love for us. It was wonderful to listen at the feet of these learned men. My advice to you is to take every opportunity to listen to gospel preachers who are knowledgeable in the Word of God.

Second was the friendliness of the people. God’s people are friendly. When we were in school there, the classmates were friendly, and it has not changed today. It was encouraging to hear people speak to us that we did not know. Isn’t it amazing how one “Hello” can make your day? No Christian should be a stranger. We all have one thing in common, our love for God.

The last thing I noticed was the dress of both students and visitors. Most college campus’ I’ve been to lately, the boys have been dressed in low riding jeans, awful writing on their tee-shirts, or skin tight jeans. Not here. The young men were dressed conservatively, and the preacher students were dressed in suits or dress shirts and pants and neckties! How wonderful I felt being in their company. Another thing I noticed were no earrings or long hair for the males. What a wonderful example to the adults that were present.

Now, lets talk about the young women. There were no mini skirts, no tops with plunging necklines, and no skin tight jeans. Oh, I know those things are the popular dress for girls, but I’d say these girls were just as popular, or probably more so, than the girls we see with these dramatic clothes. It was wonderful to see these modest girls. There were also no nose rings or piercing of any kind on these girls, well there were pierced earrings, but that doesn’t count.

Why do I think this is important? The Bible teaches us to be modest. To not draw attention to us by our dress, or undress. It is important to follow God’s Word.

In 2 Samuel 11:2-5, we read how David lusted after Bathsheba when he saw her bathing on her rooftop. He saw her naked from his window, and he invited her to come to him. To put it bluntly, they had sex, and she became pregnant. They both sinned. She bathed on her rooftop, which was public from where David lived. David looked and lusted. That’s what undress can do for you, girls.

In 1 Peter 3:3-5. we are told to not dress to draw attention to us, but to let our inward beauty shine. God would rather see a kind and gentle spirit than to see someone all gussied up with jewelry, make-up, and extravagant clothes and hair styles. You can wear jewelry, just don’t wear too much.

My favorite verse on modesty is 1 Timothy 2:9. Let me quote it for you. It is very easy to understand. “in like manner, also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing.” This tells me that I must wear modest clothes and not stand out in the crowd by what I am wearing. Parts of my body should not be showing that will make men lust after me. I should not try to be different with my clothes or hair style.

Every person wants to be noticed. Let people notice the goodness in you and not your lack of clothing.
