We’ve talked about how we dress from the waist up, now let’s look at the waist down. Think about what you are wearing from the waist down. Are you modest?
Before long, summer will be here. That’s when most people begin to shed their clothes. The jeans we wear now, become jeans shorts, and some are pretty short. Beaches will be full of the skimpiest swimwear available.
Why do we feel the need to show everything to be admired?
One word that can be used for modesty is virtuous. First Timothy 2:9 tells women to be modest in apparel, not being showy or bringing attention to what we do or do not have on.
If we should be modest, what can we wear from the waist down? Look at what you have on.
If your Jeans are so low cut that when you bend over, or sit down, your underwear shows, it is not modest. Any clothing that is so tight that every curve in your body shows, or you can’t walk comfortably in it, is not modest.
The lack of clothing is very enticing to men. In 2 Samuel 11:2-5, we read about David viewing Bathsheba as she bathed. David shouldn’t have looked, you might say. However, Bathsheba should not have been exposing herself. The less clothes you wear, the more you make men look at you.
Designers of clothing want you to buy these cute clothes. Yet, they are becoming increasingly smaller. Assuredly, short skirts are popular in our day. We ask, how short is too short? A modest skirt is one that covers your legs when you sit down. We need to realize that shorts can be too short. The shorter a skirt or shorts are, the more you tug to keep it down. That’s uncomfortable and not very attractive.
Girls, think about what you are buying. Being cute is not a sufficient reason to buy something when modesty is at issue. Is your outfit modest? Does it cover you legs? Does your underwear show when you bend or sit? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, then you are not modest.
If we want to be an example to others, we will dress modestly.
