IF I WERE A TEENAGER

It’s been a long time since I was a teenager. I’ve been reflecting how I would live my life differently, if I could. There are a lot of changes most adults would agree with. Time and space will only permit a few to be listed.

1. Since everyone should put God in their life first, that’s what I would do better. I would study more of the Bible and attend more church services. I would listen better and not pass notes during the sermon. No one does that anymore, do they? I would enjoy the hymns more and sing with more enthusiasm.

The Bible teaches us to study. 2 Tim. 2:15. God tells us through the Holy Spirit in Heb. 10:25 that we need to attend all worship services.

2. I would obey the laws of the land more. Now, I didn’t do anything bad, but steal a grape in the grocery store, but that was wrong. Our government and God has placed laws that we must obey. Whether it’s speeding down the highway or shoplifting, it is wrong. What you do now can show up to haunt you when you are an adult. As a Christian, you must obey the laws of the land. It may seem minor to you, but if it is against the law, it is not.

3. I would be kinder to everyone. It’s so easy to get angry with someone and say something about them, or to them, that you’ll regret later. One kind word to someone may make a difference in their life. I’ve found it’s easier to be kind than it is to be angry. In 1 Timothy 5, the chapter is devoted to how we treat people. Remember what some people call The Golden Rule,John 3:16. If we do treat people like we want to be treated, life will be so much easier. Be nice to your parents, your school teachers, your peers, and your siblings. Kindness will make a happier home and school.

4. I would chose my friends and boyfriends more carefully. That is so important. Your friends can change your life, or you can change theirs. Which would you rather it be? I would much rather change someone’s life, than have them change mine. If your friends drink or use drugs, please get away from them. There are plenty of other people out there who do not use drugs or liquor. It is easy to become addicted, and it happens so innocently that we don’t realize it. Better to not partake than to be hooked.

Now, your boyfriend. He must be the most wonderful thing in your life, but how does he treat you? Is he courteous, helpful, and respectful. On the other hand, does he drink, use drugs, and drive fast cars? If this is the case, run as fast as you can. Even when a boy hits you he will tell you he loves you and will never do it again, but he will. He’ll always ask for forgiveness, and he’ll say he’ll never do it again. Don’t believe him, he will. He’ll do it over and over again. Find a boy that respects you and loves you for who you are, not what you will give him.

Think on these things. There’s not a lot of scripture, but a lot of common sense. One of these days, you’ll be looking back on your life and wish you’d done things differently. My prayer is that you won’t regret a lot of things.
