THE CHOIR OF CREATION

June 29th, 2012 | By admin

by Paul Holland

We conclude our Daily Nourishment today in reading the book of Psalms. The book of Psalms is certainly one of our favorite books.  Psalm 148 is a hymn of praise. C. S. Lewis wrote a devotional book, Reflections on the Psalms in which he writes: “I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment; it is its appointed consummation. …In commanding us to glorify Him, God is inviting us to enjoy Him” (95, 97).

Derek Kidner in the Tyndale OT Commentary Series calls this psalm a “Choir of Creation” (487). You are familiar with this psalm because you have sung it frequently in worship. In 1893, these words were set to music by William Kirkpatrick.  (more…)

GOOD GIRLS OF THE BIBLE-HANNAH

Some day you will probably want to have a baby….most young women do.  Hannah did! She longed for a baby. To make matters worse, she was the second wife of Elkanah, who had children by his first wife, Peninnah, who rubbed it in and made life miserable for Hannah. How blessed we are to be under the law of Christ, and do not have to deal with several  wives for one husband!

Elkanah thought he was better than ten sons but Hannah knew better.  When one longs for a child, then a husband can not fill that void.  The love God gives us for a child is different from the  love He gives us for a husband, though both are wonderful.  So Hannah cried, and cried, and cried, and didn‘t eat, and prayed, and prayed, and prayed.  (more…)

WORTHLESS

Last night, Sunday, the area congregations in Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois began an area wide gospel meeting. The speaker is Allan Webster and he is a marvelous speaker. There were 1,506 souls in attendance last night. Singing is a cappella, and that many voices were amazing. If you are in the area of Paducah, KY, come to the Carson Center Monday, July 25 and Tuesday, July 26 at 6:15 for a time of song, and at 7: p.m. for worship.

Last night Allan’s lesson was about worthlessness. As I listened, I thought about how worthless I felt as a teen. I am sure a lot of the teens today feel the same way. By reading the newspaper and listening to the news on television, it seems to be the same today. You can see the expressions on the faces of many teens and know this is true.

One thing to remember is that you are loved by God. He made you in his likeness. In Psalm 139:14-15, the psalmist says, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are your works, and that my soul know very well.” That gives me encouragement. (more…)
